In 1991 this shopping center was presented with the first escalator ever in place in Nepal.
People were not used to this newfangled contraption had great caution (fear) in using it. Meanwhile the two western tourists (us) were enthralled with cows everywhere, unrestrained. I see 4 cows in this photo. Cows are "HOLY" and one can get, then and maybe now, 20 years in jail for killing such cows.

Made me wonder what the butcher shops were selling.

I just noticed an"interaction" of sorts which I thought was "cute".
Below is a crop of that inner scene.

In India people often LOVE to have their photos taken, especially back when film was the mainstay for cameras. In this crop the expressions are diverse and interesting.

Here is another from Jaipur taken sometime in the 1990s

Self confidence is evident in some of the faces in the photos.

From one of the linked images this is a crop showing the older girls hand gently keeping the younger girl in place. When away from the large cities I have often seen children behave very gently with each other.

The last time I was in India was July 2008 for about 3 days, only for business on three very hot summer days... hunkered down in a suppliers air conditioned office. No time for photography and no opportunities to see if things had changed much. What you see in the photo is actually a "change" for the better. Previously men would just urinate against walls near the sidewalk...they still did as these "Relief Stations" were rare in the 1990s which is why I thought it "photo worthy".

The photo of the pillar shows it surrounded by protective fence now. The fence went up in 1997.

"A fence was erected around the pillar in 1997 in response to damage caused by visitors. There is a popular tradition that it was considered good luck if one could stand with one's back to the pillar and make one's hands meet behind it. The practice led to significant wear and visible discoloration on the lower portion of the pillar."
Since I don't remember successfully putting my arms around it, I likely did not.

Monet's gardens are beautiful.

If taking a train from Paris to Giverny... from my experience don't try to pronounce "Giverny" unless fluent in French. You will get your train ticket significantly faster if you write "Giverny" on a piece of paper and hand it to the ticket person.
